Subodhini AKA Subi

This is a story of a sister and her younger brother from Pune, the sister city of Mumbai, a top-ranked food hub in the world.

In 2002, a brother migrated to New Zealand. He was missing the great Indian street food, wada-pav, and his favourite Shrikhand. He sensed this niche in the New Zealand market and an opportunity to start a small food business.

With no background in cooking the food, and zero clue of commercial kitchen operations, his only hope was

his sister back in India, who was a gifted cook, the best in his entire family. She came to the rescue of her brother. Through their telephonic conversations, she guided him, offering him valuable tips on how to prepare great food. The first break came literally with the first-ever order of 45 kgs of Shrikhand serving 300 guests. It was a great start for the business...

In 2004, he started a food truck in Auckland, selling street food like wada pav, pav-bhaji, missal, chaats, and dosas on the menu. The business idea was a remarkable success, and the duo decided that the sister would join the brother soon. Their fate had other plans, and his sister was caught by surprise by breast cancer. Despite the big fight, in November 2005, she succumbed to it.

 

Eventually, in 2008, 'Curry Mantra', a full-fledged Marathi cuisine and street food restaurant, was launched. It was placed amongst the top three Indian restaurant businesses in NZ in 2009. Later, a few creative Indian cuisine ideas followed.

Later, ice creams and dessert menus based on Indian fruits and sweets were created for customers

 

As a tribute to his beloved sister, Subodhini AKA Subi, his brother named the brand 'Subi's Desserts'
