A record number of gold medals awarded in the NZ Ice Cream & Gelato Awards 2025 proves Kiwi makers are creating high-quality iced treats with many delicious flavour combos.
That’s the view of NZ Ice Cream & Gelato Awards 2025 Chief Judge, Geoff Scott who is thrilled to announce 68 gold medals this year. “The record number of gold medals sit alongside an increase in companies entering the Awards, with 29 ice cream and gelato makers competing— a fantastic 20% increase on 2024. The strong turnout from boutique companies and scoop stores in particular was a highlight, and it contributed to the 68 gold medals awarded this year.”

Scott led an esteemed panel of 24 food judges through the ‘arduous’ task of tasting and evaluating 266 entries with meticulous attention to detail in late July. Creations were assessed across 15 categories – including Classic and Premium Ice Cream, Gelato, Sorbet, Open Creative, Dairy-Free and Low Fat Ice Cream or Frozen Yoghurt. This year, entrants were invited to create something special with ‘Best of Biscuit’ being the category theme this year.
Premium Flavoured Ice Cream had 41 entries, with 13 gold medals and 15 silver medals awarded. “The innovation from our boutique gelato makers was especially impressive,” Geoff said. Among the gold medal winners was Subi’s Desserts Pistachio Kunafa and Chocolate Ice Cream with judges’ noting; ‘Well balanced flavours and great texture and colour. Rich and indulgent. A Dubai Chocolate Lovers dream!’
